I have a similar issue to that of GneC of 18/2/05 in that I wish to install an additional HD. Difference is that I am currently running two sata drives in a striped array (one big HD)and I have installed the new IDE HD onto the primary IDE slot. I am using xp pro. I want two seperate op systems.
How do I reinstall xp pro onto the IDE HD? I am having issues doing this because I think that during xp pro setup I am being asked to reinstall the s3112 drivers that relate to the sata drives. Detailed instruction would be greatly appreciated.
Secondly, after installing the IDE HD it is now listed as Disk 0 in the Disk Manager, and the sata drives as Disk 1, how do I swap them around?

If boot from XP install CD, and don't press F6 (ie, don't supply SATA drivers), the install should only see the IDE drive (and so will install an independent version of XP there). You'd need to sort out boot menu/boot manager after install.

Thanks for the advice. By 'sorting out the boot menu and boot manager' do you mean the boot.ini file where I need to give the ide drive a seperate identity. At the moment during setup the ide drive is identified as C, is that an issue or will each op system be identified as C ? Lastly, does it matter if the ide drive is disc 0, how do I make the sata drive's disc 0?

Thanks for your patience and advice.

You'll need to either install a boot manager (eg, or edit the boot.ini file on the drive which will be booted first (ie, depends on order you define in the bios - IDE (hd0) or SATA (hd1)). Each installation's system drive should appear as C: to itself. It shouldn't matter which drive is 0 and which is 1 - though you may need to experiment with boot.ini entries - eg, installation on booting drive should be rdisk(0) partition(1), other one rdisk(1) partition(1), but if that doesn't work....
