Dual Athlon MP 1600 problems.

Ok I have been up all night to figure this out. I have searched and searched until I can seach no more. I have just finished installing two Athlon mp 1600s running win xp pro on a msi K7D MS-6501. I cannot boot to the OS, or safe mode or recovery console. Whe I turn the PC on I get the the post the cpus are detected the memory is detected and is working even my pci ide card. Bt it goes to the safemode option menu right away and no matter what I select it just reboots. Also I have a distro of knoppix that I ran from the cd rom that works with no problem. The PC ran fine until I did my little upgrade.

Also the video card is an older ATI All-In-Wonder.DOn't think the problem is that because everthing worked fine under knoppix wich is running from the cd-rom. I need help please.

If I'm reading your post correctly, XP was installed prior to your upgrade to MP processing. If that is the case, I suspect XP's HAL in now set incorrectly. From the below references, you probably need to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows XP to have the proper HAL installed.

I second that. Windows uses a different HAL depending on if you have a single CPU or an SMP system. You can't just add a second CPU to an existing installation without updating the HAL, doing a repair install, or something similar.

Thanks that is what ended up doing before i got your replies and it worked. But I may have created another problem for myself. A friend of mine just sold me his Old Gigabyte GA-7VAXP board with an Athlon XP 2600. I decided to swith out the dual board to use as a server just to get some hands on experience. And now I am using the Gigabyte in my main machine because it has a Promise ATA 133 Raid controller. So now the server won't repair Windows Server 2003 it just freezes and locks up and the Gigabyte won't show all of the IDE devices even though the bios is set to use the controller as ATA and is detects all drives while booting just no show in OS.
