hi all,

Someone developed a SQL Server 2000 package. I'm the DBA and I can't open the package because it is protected by a password.

I didn't know it was possible to password-protect a package.
Maybe the package uses an Access data source that is password-protected? Or an Excel document? Who knows... I can't get into it.

How can I get into this package ?

Thanks for any ideas. John

There is an option in the DTS package to assign a password to it. Check in the dts tables in msdb database there might be a way to change the password.

That or call the person that made it and ask them for the password.

I also created a DTS package and can't remember the password. It is not in any of the dts or sysdts tables in the msdb database. Anyone else know how to find the password?

thanks.

Thanks!

I never did find a way to get the password BUT funny how I was able to DELETE the package!

Thanks!

DTS can not only be saved with a password, it can be encrypted with that password too.

When using passwords, you have 2 options. An Owner password and a User password. You will see these two options on the next to last screen when using the DTS Import/Export Wizard (if you save the package, not if you just run it immediately). I'm sure they're available in the Package Designer, but I haven't figured out where yet.

Owner Password: If you set an owner password, the package user needs the password to edit or run the package.

User Password:

GAH. Hit post by accident. Here's the rest of what I was going to say:

User Password: Package users with access only to the user password can run the package. However, they can neither open nor edit the package unless they have access to the owner password. If you set a user password, you also must set an owner password.

This information is straight from Microsoft's website ( Hope it helps you understand how those work.

BTW, a SysAdmin can delete DTS packages without requiring a password. Passwords are only required to get into and view the contents of a package if it has been saved with such security. If the package hasn't been saved with a password, then anyone with proper rights can get access to it.

And an Owner's pwd is basically an encryption on the package too.

Have you tried changing the owner for this job? I know it can be done, just don't remember the steps. Maybe someone will post how to do that.

crevill,

I assume you meant "the owner of this DTS package".

I've never been able to find a way to do that.
Wouldd like to know myself.
