dts lag

hi i am having an issue with high latency when i try to perform over a t1 to another location. When i do a straight insert however it is much faster than an actual dts job. Does dts require a certain amount of free space to do its transformation and subsequent file transfer? If so does anyone know how much?

Are there any troubleshooting steps that exists for dealing with dts ? i'm new to dts and not sure if you can set dts wrong and what the exact right steps are. Thanks everyone for your help.
