Hello everyone!

I have a question about Document type definition.
In SGML or XML we can write a DTD; for example, we can define an DTD specifying the format of how a letter or a poem should be structured.
Can we write DTDs for HTML documents as well?
When I tried to look up, I found that the only DTD information included in HTML documents is the version of HTML(included in the DOCTYPE part of the HTML file) we want to use.

Does this mean that we cannot define our own DTDs, say for instance defining how a book should be organized in HTML?

Please enlighten me on this. Thanks a ton in advance!

HTML, like XML, is a SGML application, that is, there is a DTD for HTML so all HTML documents must be compliant with it.

There's antoher specification called XHTML that is an XML application, that is, must be compliant with a DTD XML.

Maybe this article may help

Cheers,
Dian
