Hello,

I am trying to configure my workstation (Solaris 9) so that it is part of a domain. Now I cannot log in any more since I get the following message:
"The DT messaging system could not be started.
To correct the problem, select the Failsafe session and log in.
Check that the hostname is correct in these locations:
/etc/src.sh /etc/hosts /usr/adm/inetd.sec
Check to see any magic cookie related error messages in these locations: /var/adm/messages and $HOME/.dt/errorlog."

Of course I've played with /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, and /etc/nsswitch.conf.

Thank you
Olivier

There are no error messages. The problems has to do with DNS. When the OS starts the CDE screen, it must try to resolve the host name. I had the entry hosts: dns or hosts: dns files in the nsswitch.conf file. After reversing the order of the entry hosts: files dns , it worked. I had the same problem with HP-UX long time ago as well.

Thank you. Olivier

I just experienced this problem few days ago. I found that my problem in confined to a particular user. What I did was to remove the user account and re-created the account again with same setting. It works fine now. Could have been some setting files related to CDE being corrupted.

Ofranmar I have experienced that exect error message several times in the last month but I get it not because of any problem with DNS or the Host files I get it when the user that logged in either has no space left in their home directory (in our case engineers have let simulation programs fill up their home dir with data) or the system that their home directory exists on was down.
