I had a service call to extend a demarc from a telco room to the customer sweet. What I found was a DDM2000 with a DSX panel that terminated on a 66 block. From my memory when dealing with T1s is that 1) there is a smart jack to plug into or 2) a CSU/DSU to plug into.

What happened was a tech guy (me) was sent to connect the extended demarc to the router from the RJ48X jack and two cable pullers were sent to run the cable from the telco room to the client closet, what was missing was that experience OSP Technician who can terminate that T1 so it can be patched. The way it was terminated confused me as well, it went from the DSX to a 1st 66 block and then cross-connected (in/out) to another 66 block that had a cable pair running downstairs to another 66 block with the customer name on it. At that point I was thinking it might have already been extended just need to locate in the client's closet but they had to close for the day.

I just need to know what did i miss or whether I'm right about a dsu/csu.

You are right. I have done a lot of these extend of T1 circuit to my customer's suites. Local dial tone vendor should have left a smart jack for the customer, or it should've been taken to a csu/dsu.. Some dialtone vendors do leave it at the NPOP, but it should be lableled wherever it is. Best bet, call the dialtone vendor for location of circuit.

We all need a little help once in awhile. Tony the Phoneman..

Thanks for the input, I got some clarification on what is suppose to be happening. The cisco router has a csu/dsu card in it.

Now where I'm stuck at now is the physical cross connecting part. I need to take another look at the panel because there should at least be some wire wrap pins or RJ connectors there.

Regardless if you connecting to a CSU or a T1 card, it's still a DS1 connection.
The reason there is no smart jack is because all of the diagnostic and monitoring capabilities of a smart jack are in the DDM2000, only on a higher scale.
I may not be 100% on this, but the DDM2000(or most just refer to it as a MUX) is an OC3 level termination and capable of bringing in 3 DS3s (72 T1's). Normally they will fan out the T1's on a DSX panel and 66 blocks. Still the carier tech should have terminated the T1 he/she extended on an RJ48X or 48C, and LABELED it..

Here's what you want to do...
Extend the circuit to wherever on the 66 blocks, knock a 4 pair down on the last block and run to your equipment. Easiest thing to do next is use a surface mount jack with 8 pins. Inside the jack the pin numbers are normally next to the wire screws. The DS1, or T1, will be on two pairs. Just terminate the two pairs on the jack, the first pair on pins 1 and 2, the second pair on pins 4 and 5. They should be in order, but if you have an issue flip 1 and 2 WITH 4 and 5 and you should be in business...

Hope this helps..
