My main CM is in the UK and I have 2 LSP's located in India, which do not observe DST. Today they are set with offset +4:30. This Sunday this needs to increment 1 hour and be +5:30. In the daylight savings rule table that line isn't a problem to make work, but in March when the UK goes ahead 1 hour there's no way in the rule for me to decrement 1hour for India. Is there other ways to get this to not require someone to manually change the offset?

Trilogy8,
'disp daylight-savings-rules'
verify that 0: = no Daylight Saving

'change locations x'
change the DST number 0 (it's probably currently set to 1)
Hope this helps.

The Main location is using 0 for DST rule. If I define DST rule 1 for this remote site I don't have the option to decrement the hour between march and October to line it up with the core. Incrementing an hour between October and march works, but not the opposite.

Main Site is using rule 0 which I thought was hardcoded as no DST. How is the time updating on your Main server? Are you using an NTP server?
If I'm not stating this correctly can you post a snapshot of locations and daylight-savings-rule table?

It's a 6.3.x, and location 1 which is the main site, is using DST rule 0 (no DST). I'm assuming it gets the time from the NTP config in the web interface. The remote LSP's are all setup as individual locations and have the offsets setup accordingly. In the case of this specific LSP it has the offset set at +4:30. This Sunday the main location will go back an hour, while this site doesn't observe DST. What we wind up having to do is change the +4:30 offset to +5:30, which is a manual process. I thought I'd be able to create a DST rule for this location, but in March the main site will go forward an hour. That means I'd need to de-increment the time in the new LSP rule, which isn't an option. Unless I'm interpreting that table incorrectly and there is a way to define it.

Create a daylight-savings rule 1 that corresponds to your main site in the UK and use rule 0 for you locations that don't have DST. Using an NTP server to update daylight savings is not the recommended method.

That's interesting.. I didn't know that. For other LSP sites that fall in the same time zone as the main site, should those be given that new DST rule and leave the ones that don't observe at 0?

I'm fuzzy on one portion. the VCM setup with NTP, which I assume has to be standard practice. This site is location 1 and the idea is to define DST rule 1 for this, with the corresponding dates. The DST table for the dates in March are easily set to increment 1 hour. The section of the rule to Stop in October where the time needs to go back an hour. How does that actually happen? By putting nothing in the increment field? That's where I'm fuzzy on the part about the time moving back the hour.

What timezones are your servers configured to use?

I have roughly the same (UK core and multiple Indian sites)

I have a DST rule of 0 (no DST) for India and a DST rule of 1 for UK and offsets of 4:30

Works fine

Take Care

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

On the servers I'm using London time zone. Your setup is exactly like mine only I don't have a DST rule setup for the main location. I'll make those changes.. in DST rule 1 what does your Stop line have in it? For the March date it would increment an hour.. for the October date do you leave that blank in the increment field?

Solution

You can set up 15 customized daylight savings time rules. This allows administrators with switches in several different time zones to set up a rule for each. A daylight savings time rule specifies the exact time when you want to transition to and from daylight savings time. It also specifies the increment at which to transition (for example, 1 hour).

Instructions:

Establishing daylight savings rules

In our example, we set daylight savings time rules for the Central and Eastern time zones.

To modify a daylight savings rule:

1.Type change daylight-savings-rules and press RETURN. The Daylight Savings Rules screen appears

2.Complete the 'Start' fields for rule 1

a.Type Sunday in the 'Change Day' field.
b.Type April in the 'Month' field.
c.Type 1 in the 'Date' field.
d.Type 3:00 in the 'Time' field.
e.Type 1:00 in the 'Increment' field.

This information specifies the day, month, date, and time and increment at which you want the system clock to transition to daylight saving time.

Note: You cannot delete a daylight savings rule if it is in use on either the Locations or Date and Time screens. However, you can change any rule except rule 0 (zero).
3.Complete the 'Stop' fields for rule 1.

a.Type Sunday in the 'Change Day' field.
b.Type October in the 'Month' field.
c.Type 25 in the 'Date' field.
d.Type 3:00 in the 'Time' field.

This information specifies the day, month, date, and time you want the system clock to transition back to standard time.
4.Complete the 'Start' fields for rule 2.

a.Type Sunday in the 'Change Day' field.
b.Type April in the 'Month' field.
c.Type 1 in the 'Date' field.
d.Type 4:00 in the 'Time' field.
e.Type 1:00 in the 'Increment' field.
5.Complete the 'Stop' fields for rule 3.

a.Type Sunday in the 'Change Day' field.
b.Type October in the 'Month' field.
c.Type 25 in the 'Date' field.
d.Type 4:00 in the 'Time' field.
6.Press ENTER to save your changes.

Displaying daylight savings time rules:

To display daylight savings time rules:

7. Type display daylight-savings-rules and press RETURN. The Daylight Savings Rule screen appears

8. Verify the information you entered is correct
