Have two separate lans. One has 8 pcs using ip addresses provided by isp. The other has 90 pcs using static ip addresses (bogus) beginning with router at 10.10.10.1--

Both lans are peer-to-peer using Windows 98 OS. Using Realtek NICS 10/100 and 10/100 switches from amer.com.

Random pcs will drop internet connection and have to be re-booted to re-establish internet connectivity. (This is verified by pinging; can ping other pcs on the lan, can ping the router (gateway), but cannot ping a server on the internet--receive a request time out return.

Have verified cables, lan connectivity (all workgroups ok). Traffic is never more that 20% usage on either lan.

Problem has existed over a year with no solutions from Microsoft, Covad, FlowPoint, nor XO Communications. All tech support indicates that the lans are set up ok, but cannot explain random drops.

What else could be tried?

Thanks for your help -- PLEASE, I AM GOING NUTS!

You say that you have 2 LANs
the 8 pc's with the assigned isp ip's
the other have static ip's to 90 plus nodes.
questions
1. Are both LANS on the same dsl router?
2. the 8 pc's with the isp assigned ip's, do they have the same trouble?
3. when the problem happens can you do a show arp from the
router?
4.on the ethernet port of the router what is the speed 10 or
100?
5. Are you running any routing protocol on the dsl router?
6. Are you running NAT ( network address translation )?

Please advise, Thanks. Jeter@LasVegas.com
