Hey all,
I'm setting up a home network between two computers using a router and a DSL modem. One computer uses Windows 98SE and the other uses XP. I am having trouble setting it up because I'm almost new at it and I don;t know how to configure the PC to connect to the Router to change the settings. I am using a Speadstream modem with a Belkin router. Both computers when I try to write any IP addresses in give me the "Internet Explorer could not open the search page" message. Also, I am using the TCP/IP protocol and don't know how to set it up.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The xp computer should work without any configuration changes. Cabling goes from the Speedstream modem to the WAN port on the router. The LAN ports on the router connect to the network cards in the pcs. All connections using 'straight through' patch cables.

To get the xp machine to access the router config pages, type in the browser address bar.

Post back with any specific problems that you have.

Also, if your ISP has given you software such as WinPOeT, then you will want to uninstall it and configure your router's encapsulation to use PPoE and enter your user name and password in the routers internet setup.

Hey,
Thanks guys, I've got it working. I think the reason was that I had way too many protocols installed. I now know that you need is TCP/IP. After I uninstalled the un-needed protocols everything worked like a charm. I had access to the router. I have a couple of questions though; In the router settings, I used the Connect on Demand feature. On my own router (Linksys BEFSR41) there is also a keep alive feature. What's the difference? I use it at home and my neighbours use the connect on demand feature but it seems the same to me. My other question is how do I get the Windows 98 machine to communicate with the XP machine? The XP machine has complete access to the Win98 machine but not vise-versa. I'm quite puzzled. All hard Drives are shared.
Thanks for your replies,
MacDim

BTW, The router is a PINE router. Got it for about 40$ Canadian.
