for a number times I have number of lines that have DSL on them, the user complains that there is No dial tone, however the DSL still seems to work OK, In each instance I have disconnected any House wire and checked for dial tone or any line voltage, not finding any then called the LEC, I don't think there anything else to check on the premis, is there something I can ask the LEC to check ?

From your description it sounds like you have a LEC problem. There may be a wiring issue in the central office where the line equipment and DSL splitter connect.

Open a trouble ticket with your service provider to get it fixed.

Hope this helps!

Thats kind of what I've always thought, the "most recent" problem occured the other day and happened right after a lighting strike that blacked out power for about 3-4 seconds, (thank goodness for UPS's) So I have to imagine the LEC is hopefully running around figuring out wires and checking/restoring service

I would not leave it to the LEC's imagination to fix it without reporting it to repair.

By reporting it to repair the customer can get 'out-of-service' credit from their bill once it is fixed. Most state PUCs require providers to do this, but a report has to be made first.

Are you paying for a dialtone line? Is it ADSL, SDSL, DSL or what?
Some vendors are talking about DSL for any high bandwith that isn't a T1.

By saying the user is complaining that there is no dial tone I am assuming that there is SUPPOSED to be dial tone? Some recent changes in the DSL world are now having some providers provisioning DSL without dial tone for an additional fee. That way you eliminate your local land line and just use your cell phone or VOIP provider for your telephone service.

Otherwise I would assume what others have told you - that there is a problem with the "combiner" or the dial tone side of the circuit before the combiner that puts together your DSL and dial access on the same line at the LEC and you should open a trouble ticket.

thanks for all the info when I came accross problems like this, I usually go to the demark disconnect any house wire and confirm it's dead or Not dead. if Dead I open a Ticket with the LEC, and be done with it, if OK at the demark then I get to "troubleshoot" by checking at the various jacks/wire to see where it stops,

I know you can get DSL by itself with no dial tone but fortunately that the exception rather then the rule in most case's I suppose that Depends on the particular LEC

report the problem for each case and document it, call about the progress of the repair every hour will it's down.. any problem 2 hours old talk to a supervisor, get his or her phone number and there bosses phone number.. the lec unless your with a strange non-regulated provider never has a blackout, we have bulidings for batteries and another building for genetators...

it's not that they can't fix the problem, it's that another customer is calling more oftem or screaming louder..

Amen to that one - that's how my customers get their work done ahead of anyone else, and I use the same tactic on my vendors!
