I've been out of the telco for a few years, so someone currently in the know tell me: Is DSL yet provisioned for anything other than copper pairs? I have a customer in a building that I believe is all pair gain, so I'm assuming she's not going to see DSL for now. Wrong?

depends on the carrier, where you're at, and what you're willing to pay. Verizon offers Fiber Optic in a number of areas, 14mbps down, 2mbps up, at $10 more per month than a 1.5 mbps line (at least that's what it was, and the installation is probably very high, but that's some serious bandwidth and if I can't see how T1 can touch it over the long haul). For the most part though, it's still copper pairs

Verizon in my area has been retrofitting SLC's to add DSLAM's to them (the tack on this kinda wierd looking side-and-bottom housing). It never hurts to check!

What kind of pair gain is it? Some are ADSL enabled, we have AFC's that are, also we put stringers and adtran DSLAM's in pair gains Remotes thay use 3 T1's to feed them each unit surpluses 36 ADSL lines 1.5m down 364up or 3meg down 364up is what we provide.

the telco up here offers T1 over pairgain.. its called HDSL.

hdsl is great...i'm using it since a while...perfect

HDSL is T1 transport very good 1.54meg up and down but not cheap around here $500 to $900 a month compaired to ADSL $30-50 a month for 3meg down 384 up. The only advanage to HDSL over normal T1 is you can go a couple miles over copper pairs before you need to repeat it compaired to normal T1 around 5kf. Also they have 2wire HDSL now that only use a single pair.
