DSL Modem to Modem connection

An associate of mine has asked me to work with him on his projects to solve connectivity issues at different locations. Usually, the site is a residential complex of either one multi-story building or several single/multiple story buildings

A typical scenario would be as follows.

A multi-story building with management offices and functions spread throughout the facillity. Voice grade cabling from the MPOE to intermediate closet(s). No access between ICs. No access above hard-lid ceilings. Equipment and building construction preclude the use of wireless. Building asthetics(sp) dictate that no surface mount raceway or exterior conduit runs are allowed.

The client wants to add a remote user to the network. There are no other network connections nearby. Even getting a cable to an IC would be nearly impossible. However, there are voice-grade pairs available.

I have been wondering if two DSL modems connected back to back can create a useable link. The low cost of these modems would make things a lot easier when the client absolutely has to have that user connected.

Any thoughts or ideas on how this can be done? Any experience using this method?

Thanks for any responses.
