We're ready to fly with SBC/Yahoo DSL at a friend's house. I've got to install a NIC, but have a question.

The telephone jack is actually three rooms away from the computer. The cable included in the DSL setup kit is way too short to reach that jack!

They have a really long extension line that's currently connected to the dial-up modem. Will this same everyday cable work with the DSL modem, or will we need to get someone to install an extension jack near the computer?

I have my modem running off a off-the-shelf 20 somthing foot regular old telephone extension cord that looks like a giant hairball. It works fine. I have only gone down a couple of times when my cat thought it was a play-toy.

Yep, should work fine. Just be sure to use a filter and if there are frequent disconnects, replace the phone cord (distance shouldn't be a factor).

Of course, the other option is to buy a wireless router that you can place in the same room as the phone jack.

According to SBC, the normal extension line will work. Just thought I'd post in case any other newbies had that question and needed the answer :)

Thanks, guys, for your quick responses. Enjoy your stars :)

Been doing this for so long, I hardly pay attention to them anymore!

I'm not a salty old cyber-dog like you, and it still thrills my little heart when I get a star

the shorter the run the better... and make sure all jacks in the house other then the one to the modem are filtered.

and don't make the classic mistake of putting a filter on both ends of the extension! put it on the end closest to the PC :)

Actually there's some very cheap type of extensions cords that do cause some problems. I've seem some extension cords that have this weird fiber material instead of the standard copper. Don't really know what it is but does work well for voice however when you put DSL signal through it, it doesn't always work that well.

If you're feeling really enthusaistic, open the phone socket on the wall and make sure all the internal connections are clean and tight. Mechanical joints can be a weak link.
