Trying to rack my brains for a solution, if anyone can offer any help would be most gratefull.

Setup:

12 client computers with static LAN IP's
1 Server (just file sharerer) with static IP

ADSL connection supplied by BT, dynamic IP WAN side.

What I want to do, is to add a mail server(not sure what one) to the setup. Cut out expensive ISP.

As far as I am aware I will need to be able to obtain static IP from ADSL provider to be able to route all mail to and configure the Router to route all incoming mail on specified port(110) to the IP of the mail server LAN side.

Unfortunately, BT will not give me access o the router, so no port frowarding for me.

Am I on the right track so far? Would it be possible to somehow add a 2nd router in the chain to route from the BT router that I cannot configure to the 2nd router that I can and then on to the mail server etc..

Getting quite confused, any pointers as to a better solution would be most gratefull. Trying to be as cost effective as possible.

Many thanks in advance!

*unofficially*

If its the 5168 (I think thats its model) black box router you can crack those very easily using the manufacturers Firmware, which gives you the full range of features.

*Officially*

Aye you should be able to place a router behind your BT router and use port forwarding from there.

Grebage thanks for the reply,

Reluctant to hack the BT router as it is for a client. If mine would gladly have a go.

If I did go down the router-behind-router route, I am not sure as to how this would work set-up wise. The BT Router would have static IP and be connected to 2nd router but not hub. would the BT router then automatically send traffic to 2nd router? Also vice versa, say when a request is sent for a web page by a client machine. The request would go via the 2nd router first then the BT router.. would the request automatically be pushed from the 2nd router to the Bt router on its outward journey? Very confused!

Well the vision I have in my mind at this second is:

BT Router ------> Your Router ------> Your Switch

All information going through your BT Router should enter your Personal Router, where it would meet your port forwarding rule.

I've never plugged a router into a router into a switch myself, but I'm pretty confident it would work.

Alternatively of course, and preferable - simply replace the BT router with the Router you intend to buy (sorry I missed that out in the original post) :)

replacing the router I intend to buy with the BT one is a question I placed to tech support at BT. They seemed to think that this was not possible, upon purchasing a static IP from then, an engineer would come out and replace the router.

I cannot see how this would prevent me from simply swapping the routers and entering the assigned IP manually? Unless there is some form of authentication on the supplied router BT give you.

To me, the only reason why an engineer has to come out and replace the router, is that they do not give you access to the router itself, only option being manually replace it.

sound feesable?

Well thats complete rubbish on their part to be fair, BT generally dont like anything other than the equipment they give you to be on the DSL line. You can get the wires only option however and then they dont mind, but either way any DSL modem should work fine.

All your'll need to do is swap out the Router, put in your connection details and it will be in the same state as the BT router.

Then you can add any firewall/static routes as you wish.

Thought that was the case...

I'll have a crack!

Thanks for all your help... much appreciated!
