I currently have a DSL connection and to have multi-computer access I use a Linkys DSL router to act as a DHCP server. The problem is, my domain controller (DC) is not function properly when the Router is configured to be the dhcp server. I get a netlogon error. The other PC are not able to locate the server and vise verse. I also try to configure my DC to use one of the IPs that the Router Leased as a Static IP for the DC but this does not help. When I ping my DC it gives a non routable IP address instead of the DHCP assigned address or the Static assigned address.

Help.

Hi,

The problem is that AD is based on DNS. Once you have a DHCP that doesn't know how to work with dynamic updates in DNS, your DNS is not working properly.
When you are trying to locate a resource Windows 2000 will use DNS.
You have to configure your Windows 2000 workstations for doing the update in the DNS directly. (TCP/IP / Properties / Advanced / DNS / "register this connection's addresses in DNS".
And check your DNS also. Gia Betiu

I would advise to turn the DHCP server off on the Linksys router and run DHCP from your Server... Thanks,

Hi mattwray:

I have tried not using the DSL Router as a DHCP server but then I cold not get my PC to see the WAN (No INTERNET Service).

Any advice.

I am going to try you advice first but I am not sure how to configure my Clients to: You have to configure your Windows 2000 workstations for doing the update in the DNS directly. (TCP/IP / Properties / Advanced / DNS / "register this connection's addresses in DNS".

Thanks for your help also.

I would set up DNS on the server. Add forwarders to your ISP DNS server. In the Linksys DHCP scope, adjust the DNS server to your internal server. This will handle local names and forward unkown names to your ISP.
About not being able to get out with static IP's. If you give a machine a static IP in the same subnet with the router as gateway, can you ping the internet? First by IP and then by name? Try and ping 65.69.194.169, then try and ping yahoo. If you are having name trouble it is your DNS setup.
CHeck out this thread for DNS help...thread96-363606 Thanks,
