I am FINALLY able to get DSL! WOOHOO!! Anyway, I am 148,880 feet from the telephone companie's switch building and they are able to go out as far as 16,000 feet. I am wondering if the distance that I am away from the building will give me slower speeds? I don't want to get it if I am going to continue to get 56K speeds. Any help would be great and if you know of any place where I can read up on it I would appreciate it too.

Thanks,
Kiefmer

148,880 ft from the CO. DSL will not work. At 16,000 depending on what DSlam your provider is using you will get 640 up and down or 128 up and 512 down. “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”

I am an IT Consultant. I have a client that is considering installing ADSL at their place of business. They are located 7000 ft. form the switching-substation (approx. 1.3 miles), and they want to know approx. what kind of upstream/downstream speeds they will be getting. Can you tell me approx. what speeds they will get, as well as how to determine it for myself?

Thanks,

TXD, it's not as simple as plugging the distance into a calculator. They have to do line testing and make sure all the circuits and wiring between the two sites are as clean as possible. I have one customer who is directly across the street from the Ameritech building (no more than 700 ft of wiring) and can only get 768k. I used to live around 7,000 feet from the CO and got awesome 1.5Mb/768kb with Earthlink via Covad.

Check out -- I think there are some good techie docs on that site. They probably also have some "rule of thumb" docs as well.

Good luck...

Hey! if you are 14,000ft approx from your Central Office that is just fine....most dsl providers are able to extend to 18,000ft now and provided you are not going for any higher than 768k download then you should be good to go!
