I have read some posts in this forum to find a similar problem, but I couldn't find any with this criteria.

Basically, my brother-in-law just set up his 2 PC on a home network and switched to DSL (Verizon modem) and bought a Linksys router. When he gets an interuption in service saying the server isn't found, of course both computer are kicked off the Internet. But the problem is, when the server is back up, he can't connect through the router - only by plugging directly back into the modem. The next day, he can then plug back into the router and both computers are again connected. Does anyone know why the disruptions keep happening (unless it's Verizons server) and why he can't use the router after the connection is lost? The whole thing puzzles me because when I get called to go over and fix it, I simply plug in the router (and reboot the 2nd computer) and the connection is fine. Is there a setting I should be checking? Why does the disruption in connection throw off the router?

Thanks,
Christine

First make sure it's not the modem. Try having only one computer connected to the modem for a few days and see if it cuts. It might be the modem that is defect. Also, when the Internet is down, try connected to the linksys router web gui to see if the linksys responds. It can also be defective. Try upgrading the firmware of the linksys also.

They do only have one computer connected to the modem. The other is connected to the router. They did have the 2nd computer disconnected for a few days from the router and it didn't cut out. Does it have anything to do with the 2nd computer being old (Win98SE)? Main computer runs XP.

There's the problem. You need both computers connected to the router, and the router connected to the modem. Let me guess, the computer connected to the modem is using a usb connection, and the one connected to the router is using ethernet connection? If the older computer doesn't have network interface card (NIC) you'll need to have one installed so it can connect to the router. They're fairly cheap (10-12 dollars) and are a lot more reliable than usb. By the way, do you have the Westell 2200? Email me at kbergmann@kncdigital.com if you need a more specific answer as to what you need to do.
