Hi,

I am a Linux brand new. First time with Linux. I have to install Linux (workstation) on my PC that runs Win98. I have problem with accessing the internet. I have DSL from Sprint and network with 2 orther PC's through the hub. I can ping the other 2 PC's from linux but I cannot access the internet. Any help or hint will be really appriciated.

thanks a lot in advance

Hi,

Well you could try to run the command 'adsl-config' from a terminal window (it will prompt for root pasword) and maybe that will be all you need. There is an option to use 'dial-on'demand' which, if activated, should mean that you don't need to explicity do anything to connect.

If you have not activated Dial on demand you can start your internet connection with /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe start , stop it with /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe stop and see if there is a connection alive with /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe status.

If that doesn't get you online have a look at -->

make sure that default gateway on the internal pc's point to the linux-machine. That way you'll have internet on thoose machines as well.
before making changes using adsl-config, make sure that the dsl-NIC doesn't have an ip-address or similar configured. That messed up things when I configured DSL.

Finally... Don't forget to use a firewall when connecting to internet like this. You will get a question about it when running adsl-config.
Take a look at the built-in firewall 'lokkit' as well.

Whoa...
On the linux machine, make sure you have the default gateway and the nameservers populated.

Try pinging the nameserver (I use 216.200.176.4 from Megapath). If it doesn't ping, make sure you can ping internal stuff. If you can ping locan stuff but can't ping the above IP address, then the default gateway setting is the culprit. Make sure it is the same as the Windows boxes.

If you are successful in pinging the IP above, try pinging You should get a reply. If not, the nameserver is the culprit.

Hi all,

I have red hat 7.1. Do I need a router and another NIC? What do I have to put for the default gateway since I access my ISP using the DHCP?
Thanks
