I have a Windows XP media center computer with Service pack 2 that will not dial in through a dsl connection it keeps giving error 797 indicating that the device is in use. Also when I go into network connections for all the dial device connection it says Unavailable-device missing. Can anyone tell me what is causing this

Did this issue just recently pop up? Was anything done to the system around the same this started happening? Are you connecting to the DSL modem via USB or ethernet? Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the USB modem if you are connecting via USB? Here are some links that may help you out.

- ADSL ERROR CODES

Error 797 - The connection failed because the modem or other connecting device failed
This can be resolved by following these steps:

· Restart your computer and wait until all applications have completely loaded before trying to reconnect.

If your problem has still not been resolved uninstall and reinstall your Broadband modem. For information on how to do this please refer to the ADSL modem setup instructions or the installation cd that was provided with your modem

If the above does not help, follow the steps in the MS article below and see if they can bring the connection some life.

The problem recently popped up and nothing has been done to the system that I am aware of. The only change I have noticed is that they have a Norton Alert saying there subscription is about to expire. I am considering uninstalling and getting a new antivirus for that problem. The computer connects to the DSL modem via an ethernet cable. I will probably have to do either a repair installation or a system restore to get it working.

Have you tried recycling the power on the modem? Are you connecting your pc directly to the modem or thru a router?

If your going thru a router, I would power down the router and modem. Restart the modem, let it completely initalize, then power on the router, let it initialize, then boot your pc and see if that works.

If it does NOT work, I would then contact my ISP and ask them to check your signal. Do they see your modem?

Problem isn't with modem or router because I have several other computers and they don't have this problem. Also the error message indicates that it is not even starting the dsl dialing process

Alright I figured it out the Wan Miniport drivers were uninstalled. I just reinstalled them and the dsl connections work again
