I currently have a DSL ISP (DirecTV) that offers me one Static IP address. I have a Linksys Router that takes this IP address and uses it for internet connection and then use its own IP address for the local Network. This defeats my purpose of having a DHCP Server for my local net work. The Router is now the DHCP server.

Now since my Netfinity R4000 server has two network cards, I would like know how to configure my system so that one of the network card is used for the local lan and the other is used for the Internet.

Are you saying you want 1 NIC connected to the router, and the other only connected to the LAN? Do you still want the LAN to access the internet? Matt Wray

This is something I have been working on as well. I have a Windows 2k server behind the linksys router with an xp box connecting to the router as well. everything is working fine until I tried to setup a VPN. This did not work for me so I decide to add a 2nd nic card and put it on the public network. (Hub is connected to a Cable modem, router is connected to the hub.) But for some reason the 2nd nic card can not find the DHCP server from my ISP. Is it because of the 2 differant DHCP servers?

onederlick,
I have a similar setup at my office. Try going in this order, Cable Modem-> Router-> Hub-> Network. On my personal one, I have a Modem/Router in one box with a public IP. Then I've mapped port 1723 to the private IP of my Server. This may be way off base, if so tell me where I'm going wrong with what you're trying to do.. Matt Wray

Thanks Guys:

Mattwray: Yes, I still want to access the Internet with my LAN machines.

Further, I would like to have my own DHCP Server (Netfinity R400). This will allow all my other clients/servers to connect to my domain. On that same server.

Matt:

Yes, that is the intent to have my Local LAN have access to the network as well as the server that the DSL line is plugged into.

If you can point me into the direction where I can find this info that would be great.

My intent is to have all of my 5 PC have access to the internet as well as access to a domain that I have created on my local server (DC). The problem with this is: Linksys Route is already a DHCP Server. When I disable the DHCP function on the Router the entire network is nolonger functional.

Thus, I want to have one of my network card on my DC (Domain Controler) become the means by which my other 4 PCs get IPs assigned to them. Currently they are getting a DHCP assignment from the Router.

My ultimate goal is to have on of my PC become a Mail Server (Exchange). But that is in the future for now getting my DC to use both Network cards is priority. 1 card for the internet and the other for my local intranet.

Thanks.

VZ, You should be able to turn off the DHCP server on that router, and give it a static IP in your range.
Or you can do what I've done with my network, maybe that's what you're getting at.
I have my server with 2 NICs, 1 for the WAN and 1 for the LAN. My WAN NIC is connected to my ISP router and receiving DNS and IPs from there. The internal NIC has a static IP and is running DHCP and DNS for the LAN. The server is set up as a router running RRAS/NAT for the local LAN with forwarders for DNS to the ISP server.
Maybe that's what you want to do, I'm still a little hazy.. Matt Wray
