I have a DSL connection to the Internet and win 2k server with active directory installed. How should I setup the dns addresses for the client systems? The clients are win 2k pro. Should I put in the addresses for dns for the server or the ISP?

Thanks for your help......

Have the primary DNS server be directed to your Server. Review this faq96-3017 to make sure your server is set up correctly.

If you have no router then you would need the server to have 2 network cards in it. The win2k server will act as the gateway for the client connections.

Hi CluelessJon

Could you elaborate on this please as I am interested in setting my server up for my clients to access the internet via our connection (ADSL on USB modem). I have all the right entries in DNS on the server and for the client and couldn't work out why I couldn't access the Internet from the client.

Do I need to add a 2nd network card if the DSL connection is via USB? Am I not able to get clients to access the internet if the server connection is via USB? Also, if I can do it this way how would I configure the 2nd network card? Have DHCP assign a reserved IP address the NIC's MAC address and then use that IP address as the gateway address?

Any advice would be great

Cheers

How many clients have u got ?

Hi

It's a home test network for tinkering out of the office etc, there are only 2 clients.

ICS = Internet Connection Sharing?

I couldn't get this to work within a workgroup at all and have read that ICS cannot be used a server, but thanks for the links I will check those out.

Cheers

Thanks for that

I was thinking something along those lines also as security was my next big concern.

The NAT articles that wbg34 refers to look interesting however, putting a direct connection to the via Internet via the server is very worrying!

I take it the routers IP address would then be the gateway address, is this correct?

Hey Jatkinson Yes that is exactly Right.

The Router would act as a DHCP for you aswell.

Its as easy as Plugin and Play.

You can block or allow any ports you want
