can I find the serial somehow remotely? (right now I have no possibility read it from the label)

I don't have a ds4k here, but if you have LUNs assigned to an AIX box, you might want to try lscfg -vl hdiskXX. Perhaps the ds4k's S/N is somewhere in the LUNs VPD?

Try looking under / on the attached server you may (If best practice has been followed) have a file named userdata.txt which may contain the serial number.

Also take a look at storage subsystem name as the usual format is

tttt - 4-digit IBM machine type
mmm - IBM model number
/ - seperator
sssssss - Serial Number
# - seperator
cust_nodeid_ref

1742900/23A1234#IBM_Eng
