What types of things will happen if anything if the cable is replaced w/ any ordinary patch cord?

Warning: The timing in the Business Communications Manager system is critical. Use
the correct length cable as supplied with the expansion chassis. The system will not work
properly if you connect the Business Communications Manager expansion unit using a
cable that varies in length.

I think the length is 5m.

It is in the docs.

That I know. Just wanted to know what others have experienced as customer swapped out the cable after we installed it.

Everytime I tried to swap it out with a shorted one (because the expansion cabinet was right below the main unit) it didn't work. Everything will look normal in terms of the leds but none of the sets or trunks will work.

According to Nortel, this cable is precision manufactured so as to deal with the timing issue as Cook says.

If it happens to work with a non Nortel supplied cable, it's just blind luck.

thx emillysdad. That probably explains why a tech couldn't get a trunk card to work. Someone replaced the DS256 cable w/ a standard 3ft patch cord.

Now we get to bill 'em for a new part plus time to drive out there all because they thought they knew better. Cha-ching!
