DRS? Has anyone on this panel implemented this?

HEllo-

Thinking about obtaining VMWARE Enterprise Edition w/DRS. Can anyone here provide pros and cons, I have read many studies and some whitepapers but this forum in golden concerning objectives on technology.


Please let me know eitherway and I can provide information on what I feel is worthy of DRS

think you might want to go 1st to vmware.com and d/l and read the techie doco...

I think the 2nd thing you want to do is get the product names right...

What are your requirements for virtualization? What other options have you considered? If you don't know where you are, every direction is the wrong one. If you don't know where you're going, you're bound to end up in a bad place.

You can build your own pros and cons once you determine what you need to do, how much your current costs are, how much your future costs will be, what your current capabilities are, and what they will be. And then you'll have the meat you need to appease the bean-counters who want to spend less and the techies who want more stuff...

I have implemented DRS in our environment and it works as described. We have a 5 node cluster hosting 124 VM guest sessions. DRS juggles the sessions around to equalize the load of all 5 nodes. So far we have not seen any issues with the technology.

Have been using it for 9 months partialy automated in a 3 node cluser with ~ 60 VMs. Work well for us. Have never had an issue but we have never let go of the reigns either.

Anyone want to enlighten me on the DRS strategy their using w/ VMware? I've got consolidated backup, but no single document on really setting it up. I have found some documents of a module for backup exec but it's pretty much some command lines with no description of what to do.

DRS and VCB have nothing to do with each other. If you need assistance on VCB, there actually is a wealth of information on VCB. It can be tricky to set up and even painful to get Backup Exec working with it.Check out this link. It has tons of information.

As for DRS itself, we are using it very sucessfully. We have had some issues about DRS recalculation after a host failure but no product is without its issues. I think that if you are running a 2-node or more cluster, DRS is indispensible.
