We are using SCO 5.0.6 unix with DSL static IP addresses and accessing system using icetcp from James River; the client end also has DSL with static IPs.

Several times a day, one or more sessions with just hang up. There are no error messages, they just go away. If the user is actively using the session, he or she will notice that the session becomes unresponsive for several seconds before the window closes.

The absence of messages really complicates the problem.

If you have any ideas, I would really appreciate hearing them.

Thanks in advance

Everything that I find on the net says that the product is bug ridden and most have replaced it with other programs. The dropped session for no apparent reason was the most common concern cited.

But if it is just terminal emulation that you are looking for, why not upgrade to something a little more secure than telnet and ftp. Secure Shell provides encryption for your data in transit (so that passwords aren't sent in the clear).

Plus, there are numerous vendors out there who provide varying levels of support and complexity of interfaces. Most will also provide tunneling of X sessions, so you can run an X server on your client machines and send an xterm across the link.

You can download some of the ssh clients (like putty) for free, so you can try it out before switching everyone over.
