A principal at one of my campuses has complained on a few occassions that sometimes when she's on an outside call with a parent the call will suddenly just be dropped. No one else at this campus has had any problem with only outside calls being dropped though, and everyone gets outside calls on a daily basis. Now it doesn't make any sense to me why only one person would be affected by this. I don't think it's her phone otherwise it would be doing the same thing with internal calls. Am I correct in assuming that her problem does not lie with our phone system, but that the problem most likely lies with the person she's speaking to at the time of the dropped call?

Are these I series phones by any chance?

There is a known defect on some I series dterms which causes dropouts. Contact your dealer if the serial number starts with 133 or less.

Ozzie is spot on - it is a hook switch problem and the smallest vibration causes the phone to hangup then immediately give new dialtone. I've replaced hundreds of them.

They're actually DTERM Series E phones. Would those also be affected?

No the Series E are fine.
What sort of trunks? Digital, copper?
Is it a principal with an attitude? If so its probably the parents hanging up. I've had to deal with that type before!
I'd swap the set with another just incase.
She maydo all her internal calls hands free but picks up for the trunk calls which means there is the chance of a hook switch but I've never seen it on a Series E only the Series I.
