I am doing my first "professional" job, and am running into two problems. Images placed from PS with transparency work beautifully until I add a drop shadow, then a lighter box prints around the image. This also happens when the image blend mode is set to multiply.

The monitor image does not have this problem, nor do eps, jpg, or tif copies of the ad when printed. The boxes only appear when printing pdf or InDesign files.

I have printed on a Canon inkjet, an Epson Inkjet, and a Konica Minolta laser printer. None of these has Post Script capabilities.

I have set all color management to match UW Prepress.

Thanks for any information you can give me. I sure do not want my client to have boxes on what prints on the catalogue!

...try exporting to pdf and printing from that to your desktop printer...

...in your pdf export settings have the transparancy flattener set to high...

I have tried both of your suggestions. Both InDesign and pdf print the boxes. When exported as eps, tiff, jpg the file prints as intended.
Thanks, though!

Are the PS files with transparent BGs and drop shadows placed against a spot colour? If so, replace the spot colour with CMYK and see if that helps.

Not against a spot color -- a CMYK swatch. I may have it figured out, as it seems to be much less of a problem on the Epson 1280 than on my old Canon or the color laser printer. Is it possibly just a printer thing?
