drop down list to accept string of characters for selection

In a drop down list with many entries, I'd like users to be able to enter several characters to zero in on the desired entry. For example, in a list of alphabetized names - entering j o should lead to Jones. In Netscape, it does. In IE the j leads you to the first name starting with J; the o jumps you to the first name starting with O. How can I force IE to do what Nescape does??
