drop-down list goes back to initial Value after submit

Once I have submitted my criteria to fill in a table of results, the drop-down list goes back to its initial value not retaining the item I've selected.

Also, is there any way to display table cell text vertically accross the cell as in Excel (ie alignment : text orientation/rotation) ? maybe using styles ?
