DRO Network Disk Creation - Error While Writing to the Disk

Hmm....I've always known this POS software package would bite me someday, looks like this is it. Since it's the Memorial Day holiday weekend here in the 50 states, I doubt I'll get a response anytime soon, but if you're stuck reading this crap on a Saturday like me, please respond...

ArcServeIT6.61, SP2A
NT4.0

I've stripped down a server (not the ArcServeIT server) and am rebuilding it. I'm ready to restore from my tapes.

Using DRO
Using the DRO diskettes seems to work at first. The on-screen options follow the .PDF guide on the CD pretty closely (except having to swap NT Disk 2 and 3 with each other about 6 times instead of once according to the PDF guide) right up until the Wizard starts. When I insert the Network Recovery Disk and clisk on the View Configuration button, the configuration seems to be missing. I click NEXT and the system re-boots just like the PDF guide says it will.

This is where the problem hits. Once NT begins to load (starts the OS Loader) an error flashes across the top of the monitor saying something about an invalid or missing DISPLAY_DRIVER and it has some hex-code with it too. This is NOT an NT BSOD, just a two line error message. The message doesn't stay up for long before the server re-boots and does the same thing again and again.

Then I think "OK, maybe the DRO disk set is bad." Tried to make a new set and when I'm creating the Disaster Recovery Disks from the ARCServe server all is going well with the Disater Recovery Disk and the 3 NT Boot Disks, but when I am prompted to enter a blank disk for the Network Recovery Disk, I get the following Error While Writing to the Disk. I click OK and see Updating Files Session Failed.

Install NT to C:\TEMPNT
So then I think, well the DRO seems to be SOL, so let's try the old-school route (ArcServe/CA Doc#16046). I go the long way around and use the NT CD-ROM to install NT to \TEMPNT.
(BTW, I did this a month ago on another server and iot worked great!). Fine, I now have NT finding the NICs and I get the NTAgent loaded. Start the restore of the C:\ drive (looking good) and I step over to my local Subway for a quick bite. When I come back, the ArcServe Error Log shows
AE0065 Failed to Restore File: Disk is Full

Strange since my original partition was 3.9 GB (1.5 used) and the newly created partition is 4.0GB.

I'm at the end of what I know to do...I have a call open with CA, and am waiting on my call back now. $350.00 FOR AFTER HOURS SUPPORT!!!! What a rip-off! Maybe I should charge them for the 8 hours I've been here trying to make THEIR lousy product work.

Any help would be graetly appreciated.

Thanks from a Frustrated Monkeylizard. Monkeylizard

May have found something...
We're trying the TEMPNT install route again. The PageFile.sys file was et at 2GB....could have caused the Disk Full error...

BTW, CA suuport was useless as usual. Monkeylizard

For any readers who are interested, I've discovered a seemingly undocumented fix. Since it's showing up here first, maybe I can charge CA for my support of their product if this fix shows up in their documents. :)

***NOTE this was posted on 5/29/02***

My ad hoc fix was to follow Doc 16046 until it was time to restore. At that time I restored ONLY the WINNT directory, followed by the files in the root of C: followed by all the other directories, followed by the registry (4 different restore jobs). Seems to have worked...mostly. I wouldn't recommend this route unless all other hope is lost. It leaves me with an uneasy feeling about how stable the server is now.
