I'm trying to build my grandkid a computer from spare parts I had here. She feels neglected as she's the only one in her house without one. I wiped out a small HD (4GB) & slaved it off a 2nd HD (10GB) in a Dell tower that nobody claimed. The floppy & CD ROM drive worked OK so I left them alone. I then copied what little was worth on the 10GB to the slave HD. After that, I formatted the 10GB HD & installed Windows 98 SE. Alas, that wiped out the Dell drivers for the LAN network (I think). Everything works fine except I can't connect to the net. I ran ipconfig & it couldn't find an address for that PC. It's hooked to my wireless router via an ethernet cable connection. The router shows the PC's connected & the tower likewise. Network Neighborhood is displayed on Desktop but no matter what I do to try & configure Network setup, I can't connect.
I called Belkin & best advice I could understand was to reinstall the driver disc or contact Dell & ask for a replacement. Not really options.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. She's a great kid (OK! So I might be a bit prejudiced) and I'd like to make her happy.

Thanks in advance.

You probably need the Drivers for the network card. you are going to have to figure out what brand and model it is, or if you now the Dell's model, you can try to go to Dell's website, and find the drivers for it there.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

If it is on-board you get into BIOS screen and get the service tag #, then from a machine with a burner you log to Dell and download the drivers specific to that machine type into a temporary location. Then burn the directory. Copy the stuff onto the dell and run them (executables to create the drivers in their own location).

Then run the install executables that were created.

You can also generate floppies for the network on the machine where you downloaded.

Or just bung in a cheapie PCI Realtek chipset network card, and install the drivers for that...

Thanks for your suggestions but I still can't sign on to the Net. I pulled the Ethernet card out & replaced it with another card that I had in an old Compaq tower (FA310TX, Net card that is). I searched online & finally found an executable driver that I burned onto a floppy. I then installed that floppy onto the PC I'm building & ran the app. Router shows a good connection but when I check the back of the tower I'm working on, only the last 3 lites on the right (100M, Full & Link) are on steady. ACT blinks on & off and the light for COL remains off.
I've double & triple checked to make sure the card is seated right. I'm about ready to pull the wireless card out of my wife's PC (which I have the CD & driver for) & install it temporarily on my grandkid's. Once I bring it down to her, my stepdaughter plans on adding it to her network via a wireless network adapter card. I have all the other apps she needs burnt to a CD but can't update them (including Windows) until I can connect to the Net.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

For Windows 98 you don't usually need to run an application. Windows normally asks for drivers when it boots for the first time after the LAN card is installed. You often need to do the soft shoe shuffle between drivers off the floppy and off the Windows 98 installation CD!

You need to see the following (as a minimum) in Control Panel, Network, Configuration tab:

Client for Microsoft Networks
NET-LYNX 100/10M PCI Adapt4r (or whatever yours is)
TCP/IP -> NET-LYNX 100/10M PCI Adapter

Start it off with a fixed IP in the same range as your router, same mask, and gateway should be router's LAN IP. Reboot after any adjustments, then try pinging the router as a start point.

also, are you sure the Lan settings are correctly configured? does the machine Get an IP address? a gateway etc..?? does your router act as a DHCP or are settings manually configured?

Just installing the card does not mean it will get connectivity. You need to configure it.

OK! Let's try this once more. I ended up reformating the C: drive & reinstalled Windows 98SE. On boot up I get the following message: No SCSI boot device found follwed by SCSI BIOS not installed. As before, everything works fine except connectivity. Device Manager shows only Dial-Up Adapter under Network Adapters. Under Other Devices, two items show up with yellow question marks:
CONNER CTT8000-A
PCI Ethernet Controller

I have no idea as to what the 1st item is about. Under the General tab of the PCI Ethernet Controller Properties is a message stating, 'The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).' Under the Resources tab, I get the following message, 'The resources this device is using do not match any of its known configurations. To assign resources manually for this device, click on Set Confiuration Manually.' It displays
Memory Range FFBEACOO-FFBEACFF
Input/Output Range F800-F8FF

I downloaded Belarc Advisor & a few other apps to a CD. I then ran that app on the tower for my grandkid. Here are some of the results:

Operating System Windows 98 SE (build 4.10.2222)

I might try installing the Ethernet card into a different slot or pulling the wireless adapter card from my wife's tower & installing it into my grandaughter's temporarily. That is unless someone has a better solution.

Thanks again for your help.

Again, you need to install the drivers for the PCI Ethernet adapter. If its showing in "other devices", it means Windows doesn't know what it is, because you haven't provided the correct drivers for it. Unlike WinXp, Win98 does not automatically detect and install things, you need to help it along.

Which adapter is this? the original one, or the one you took from the other computer?

Heres the installation guide and drivers for the fa310tx

Hi vacunita,
The site you sent me contained the same driver I located from another site. Once more, I burned it to a floppy drive & ran into problems installing it. Fotunately, my pain meds wern't working as strong and the lite in my head finally came on. I was trying to run the app from the floppy drive. Seeing the error of my ways, I copied the driver app over to the HD & ran it. The Ethernet card is now showing up under Network Adapters below Dial-Up Adapter but this time with a yellow exclemation point. Clicking on Properties, I get the following message, 'This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the file (odiload VXD)that loads the device (Code 8).'

I'm going to try extracting the file using sfc or my Startup disc. Will let you know how all turns out. Oh! To answer your ?, this adapter is one I took from another machine. I still have no idea what This CONNER CTT8000=A is uner Other devices with a yellow ? mark.

Thanks again for your help!

Really getting frustrated here! I ran sfc & extracted Vmlid.nlm from my Windows 98SE CD-ROM disc to the Novell\Client32 folder onto my HD. Since that folder didn't exist, I said OK to create it. I then extracted the Odiload.vxd file to the Windows System folder. I ran Search & found both files where they were extracted to. Alas, when I check Device Manager, I still get the yellow exclamation point with the same message, 'This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the file (odiload.VXD) that loads the device (Code 8).'
I reran Belarc Advisor & it now displays the Netgear FA310TX adapter card. My stepdaughter plans on buying a wireless adapter card for the PC that Win 98SE will support. I'll have to install more RAM but it's still aggravating not knowing what's so difficult about installing this card.
My last hope, other than any other ideas, is to try installing the card in a different slot.
Thanks again!

From Device Manager, uninstall the card. Click search for new items button, or better yet reboot and let it re-discover the card the then point it to wherever the executable you downloaded extracted the files. I'm guessing it extracts files. If it doesn't then run the executable, and then go back to device manager, and let Windows Re-discover the network card. You might need to reboot, for it to work.

The weird thing about it is if I boot up in safe mode, there's no conflict nor yellow exclamation point.
Will try your suggestion later. Thanks again!

Your "no scsi boot device" message is standard for the adaptec 2940 you have installed. You could use the indicated [CTRL][A] to get into the adaptec bios and turn the message off and tell it to not attempt to boot off scsi. No telling from the Belarc what may have been connected to it.

Not surprising that safe mode doesn't give errors. The drivers causing problems don't load in safe mode.

You could try refreshing drivers under device manager. But you will need to point the refresh towards the directory where they are stored.
