Does anyone have any links to drive recovery software, preferably free. I know that quite a few have been posted over the years, but I've not had any luck finding them!

Much obliged, Ed. I shall have a butcher's. I didn't know that spinrite had the feature of data recovery, I always thought it was merely SMART with a GUI. /blush

Spinrite will, if possible, recover the data in situ and let you know if it is necessary to copy the data to another drive (if the current one is about to fail completely).
Whilst SpinRite does make use of SMART data it has rather more to it in terms of testing drive reliability and data recovery. SMART is not exactly reliable when it comes to predicting a drive's future anyway...
