Are there advantages to partitioning a hard drive? One of the softwares we sell and support recommends that we partition the drive and install their software on the second partition, not the windows partition. Should I just make this a habit, and do it for the other softwares we install? Does this protect them in some way?

With programs it doesn't make a lot of difference as to which partition they are installed on as they are directly tied to the Windows which installed the program. If Windows crashes and has to be re-installed clean, then the programs have to be re-installed too. With data it is different in so far as if you lose Windows due to drive problems etc. and your data is stored on a different partition, you do not lose that data.

The main advatages of partitioning are :
1) Smaller file system take less time to fsck
and can be fscked in parallel, that is u win time
and it boots faster
2) Security of each partition is higher than they are placed together (hope it's clear why).
3) To recovery data placed on partition is much easier
U can even create backup partition - where u could place
important data backups.

so, it's worth doing.

I would suspect that the software manufacturer keeps their data in the same area as their program and the suggestion to put it on a separate partition is really to protect the data.
There are valid reasons to have separate drives and just as many to not have separate drives. I tend to put whatever I can on other than the boot partition.
