Is there any way to remove a partition in a hard drive without a program like partition magic or wiping everything?

I have a second hand compaq laptop that the previous owner had partitioned and it is wasting valuble hard drive space, so I want to get rid of the partition and use only one drive

Can anyone help??

If you want to merge the 2 partitions, you will need something like partition magic. There is freeware here which is (was last time I tried it) quite difficult to use (Acronis Partition Expert is another non-free app). Otherwise, its a backup, remove all partitions, create new one & reinstall.

But you could just format the partition and use 2 partitions (many find that useful anyway - eg, separate apps and data).

Be careful with the partitioning.
Depending on the model of system you are using, it may have a diagnostic partition (very small one) and if you alter it you may have a mess.

my laptop is a compaq Presario with a 3mb capasity (pretty low), I was thinking about just buying another hard drive on e-bay and upgrading this thing. What do you's think. My only problem is that I dont have the installation discs for any of te hardware on this laptop so do you think this will be a problem?

You'll need some method of transferring the whole operating system with installed apps intact from old to new disk (which could be a bit tricky as its a laptop - so can't usually plug in a disk as slave). Might need to get an adapter so you can plug disks into PC. Then depending on your operating system.... (have you operating system install CD)?

Also, are there limitations as to what drives will work with the Compaq?
