First some background info. I'm building a new computer and am planing on moving a hard drive from my old comp to the new one. The hard drive (40 gig, IBM) has dynamic drive overlay software installed on it because my old computer's BIOS was incompatible with larger HDs. I'm wanting to move the HD from the old computer to the new one and upgrade the OS from win95 to winxp.

What is the best way to transfer the HD and upgrade the OS? Should I reformat the HD in the old computer first, then install it in the new one or should I transfer then reformat?

Any insight would be appreiciated, thanks.

You can run fdisk from a Win98 floppy and delete the partition/s on the drive.

You can run fdisk /mbr from a Win98 floppy and replace the Master Boot Record.

After either one put the drive in the new computer and run the WinXP setup by booting the CD.

I'm not positive that the WinXP setup can remove the overlay but the Win98 boot disk can, doesn't take very long.
