I have a Compaq PC that periodically accesses the hard drive as if you are opening a file or something.
Running W2K with no applications open, the PC will sit nice and quite and then the hard drive will make noise as if it is being accessed and then go away.

I have some general ideas but wonder if any of you have better ideas

Hi,

First thing I would do is check for any processes that are running in the background, and the start menu (especially for any MS office fast-finds etc).

I'd then check the scheduled tasks for anything that might be set to run in the background, and then install some ant-spyware software.
