HI all,

could do with a little help so here goes;

I've setup a new 2003 AD "GasNet1.xyz"

over 2 sites W.Brom and Newcastle

I have 1 DC and DNS in each location

in newcastle I have 1 file server

from any PC in newcastle including the DC i can \\ to the IP or name and it brings up a list of shares on the fileserver.

however from WestBrom i can not it errors 'Network path not found' both to the IP and name

But from w.brom i can ping the fileServ ok, and RDP IT hence all network is ok

I dont understand is there something in AD congif i'm missing?

any help appreciated - thanks in advance - ParmB

How are you managing the routing between the sites?

You will need to set your router / firewall to route the traffic between subnets.

Thanks for the help but i dont think this is a routing issue

as i said i can ping ans RDP the fileServer from the remote location

I can even ping back from the FileServer to this Site and ping resonds.

hence network is functioning correctly

IS there something in AD i need to configure to allow file shares accross sites

What client OS are you using?

Can the clients in Westbrom access a WINS server?

When you are the IT director, it's your job to make sure the IT works. If it does work they know already and if it doesn't, they don't want to hear your pathetic excuses.

Hi, Client os is XP

however i also can't map from the 2003 DC located in WestBrom

Yes the NT4 PDC acts as the WINS server

however i can't map to the share via IP, so WINS should not matter

Are any ports filtered by firewall the ports below are required for browsing shares?

Microsoft file sharing SMB: User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports from 135 through 139 and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) ports from 135 through 139.
Direct-hosted SMB traffic without a network basic input/output system (NetBIOS): port 445 (TCP and UPD).

HI

there is no firewall between the sites.

i've discovered if i share a folder on the newcastle DC

i can map to this ok,

hence must be an issue with the actual file server, but i can map to in when i'm on the same subnet

IP settings are all correct as PING proves - I'm lost :-(

Hi all UPDATE

ok this fileserver was previously a memeber of the global 2003 AD.

I just took it to a workgoup then added to my 2003 AD

when i force a gpupdate i get an event log error

complaing about bad un / password or machine account

not i think i need to

1) remove from the domain

2) reset Local sevurity policy

3) rejoin

now i have a few q's

I need to keep share permissions intact, the server holds all personal and dept drives - take too long to re add manually

HOw do you reset svr2003 local security settings back to default?

all your help greatly appreciated
