Drive letter assignment of hardware

The problem is that I have imaged 75 computers with a drive mapping in the profile to a share on the server that allows the important application to run. It uses drive e:. It worked fine with the general workstations, but the teacher's workstation has a DVD player that (you guessed it!) is installed to drive E:. There doesn't seem to be any way to change drive letter assignments--that I am aware of anyway. My thought, however, would be to uninstall the DVD, plug in a USB flash drive and let the USB pick up drive E:. Then with the USB drive in place, I would reinstall the DVD with the hope that it would grab the next drive letter. There must be someone out there that would know whether this would get me out of this pickle!! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is this XP?

Use Disk Manager. right-click My Computer, Manage, Computer Management (Local), Storage, Disk Management.

Right-click on the CD Rom device and make it drive letter Z: if you want.

Your USB pen drive idea will not work.

Thanks bcastner. It is XP, and I have followed the steps you have outlined and see where I can resolve this. Is it possible to modify the drive letter that a usb flash drive will take? Not a big issue, but with the image on all machines taking the E: drive for a network app, it would be nice if the usb flash drive could use another letter. Thanks again.

If you have one of the very few USB pen drives that report as a hard disk and non-removable, you can use Disk Management to assign and move drive letters as above.

Otherwise, you need to add a service:

USB Disk Loader Manager
