I have a hard drive that will no longer boot into windows but I'm trying to retrieve some data from it. I've connected it to a working ocmputer and the faulty drive is detected and it is assigned a drive letter but when I try to browse the drive I get a message saying the drive is not formatted and it asks if I'd like to format the drive.

Is there any other way to salvage the data or is it gone?

Since it's allocated a drive letter, you could try running CHKDSK /R on that disk. However, that WILL make alterations to the partition and file structures if access is achieved, which may or may not be detrimental to you retrieving all your data.

Why not try running GetDataBack, see here:-

You can download and run the free version which will tell you if data is recoverable or not. However, to ACTUALLY recover it, you'll need to buy the full version. Running the full version makes no changes whatsoever to the drive, unlike CHKDSK. So you can go back again to try retrieving more data if necessary. I can recommend this software, as will many other posters on this site.

Always have to ask in this type of situation if the drive in question had a program called GoBack installed on it while it was in service in the other PC?

GoBack is not installed on the drive.

I will give GetDataBack a try.

Thanks for the help
