Drive Array Configuration

Well, I don't know much about Compaq servers... and I bought a used Compaq Proliant 5000 with dual PPro, 512mb RAM and 4 9,1gb scsi drives.

However, it seems that the system config, smart-2 array config and drives partitions had been erased... and the SmartStart CD destroyed ;) (so I don't have it). As a result, I have to run SCU from the floppies and it output the following error at startup (I think it's trying to "install" itself on the hard disk): "An error occurred while trying to access the fixed disk. Run the configuration utility to try and correct the error. If this does not correct the problem, your fixed disk may have a physical error." I can configure the whole system running SCU, except the drive array and the system partition.

Should I understand that not only 1, but 4 of my hard disk are dead? I don't think so. Does having only 4 hard disk instead of all slot occupied (5) change something? I hope not, eh.

Well, I think running drive array configuration utility would solve that problem. Is this utility available on a bootable floppy?

Thanks for any help :)

You should be able to find all the necessary utilities on the compaq site.

To give a more specific answer, try the link below:

I found that the links through the SmartStart section of the website were dead links! -----------------------------------------------------

This seems to be a windows-based utility and I could not use it... I found SP6263 from the Compaq FTP which creates a bootable disk set of the drive array configurator that I could use. It worked fine...

The necessary components can be gathered from the following locations (Choose 1 location from each category.):
Sys Erase - Compaq System Erase Utility
Download: Disk Builder program which is available on the SmartStart CD-Rom
Main Menu of the SmartStart CD-Rom

SCU - Compaq System Configuration Utility
Download: Disk Builder program which is available on the SmartStart CD-Rom
Main Menu of the SmartStart CD-Rom
Note: You should always use the latest version of SCU as possible. SCU is the glue that holds all the pieces together and therefore should not be older than any System ROM or Option ROM in the system.

Diags - Compaq Server Diagnostics
Download: Note: You cannot use Windows NT to create this set of diskettes.

ACU - Compaq Array Configuration Utility
Download: Compaq Array Configuration Utility XE for Red Hat Linux (ACU) Download: Compaq Array Configuration Utility 1.20B (SP6263.exe) README EXECUTABLE
Download: Compaq Array Configuration Utility 1.20A (SP6262.exe) README EXECUTABLE
Download: Compaq Array Configuration Utility for Windows NT 4.0 Download: Compaq Array Configuration Utility XE for Windows
