Since cubes aggregate the measures based on the dimensions that were included with it (e.g. sales at monthly level) I'm wondering if it is possible to drill through details in such a way that they are fetched from the backend source.

For example, in PowerPlay I have sales as rows and 12 months of columns shown. I drill down on a particular month but the daily details are not in the cube. Can it be define in such a way that a query (or something similar) can be executed to fetch the daily sales for the particular month?

Yes, you can set up drill through in the cube properties, under the aptly-named 'Drill Through' tab. (right-click cube and select properties). Check the box and add the required drill through. Note that you'll need to ensure that the dimension names match the filter names of an impromptu report or the dimension names of a target cube.
Check the .pdf on transformer for more details.

Yes, your example listed is a perfect example of how
cubes & drill-thru reporting work together.
Your cubes shows the aggregate summary by month,
Your drill-thru report (.imr) would show detailed sales
by the months viewed from the cube.
