Hello,
I would like to ask if other Dreamweaver users are using the Dreamweaver Templates feature to build web sites.

I didn't have much success with the usability of the templates feature in previous Dreamweaver versions, but am debating whether to give it another try (please visit to see what I'm talking about).

Your thoughts on the functionality of the template feature in the MX version would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I personally dont like templates of any kind. I prefer to use includes which means I can make a global update to one of my sites, an Intranet with apporx 3000 pages, by just uploading 1 include file not every file if it was done with templates.

I like to use templates in conjunction with some PHP code, to update nav menu's and such. I've had no problem with them so far.

You create a template, then define editable regions. (these are regions that are goping to change from page to page l;ike the body or the title) I usually define 3 basic regions. title, body, comments.
these 3 regions allow me to add whatever i want to the page without altering the template layout.

When you make a change to the template, dreamweaver will automatically look por pages that use that template and update them as necessary.

Its very simple to do really. If you need help with them, post back here and I'll try to help you.

sure, but each page must be uploaded (unlike an include)...

Known is handfull, Unknown is worldfull

I understand that for overwhelmingly large sites, templates are not that practical. as opposed to includes. But that requires some sort of programming language, i.e. PHP Javascript ... AS he was only reffering to Dreamweaver, I was not inclined to address the benefits of dynamic webpages using PHP or Javascript or any other language.

But yes you are right, includes are much more practical than templates

Hello, I am kind of new to this board, but I am having a very serious problem with templates for Dreamweaver MX 2004 on Windows. I am able to set up my templates succesfully but when I create a page based on that template and then try to preview it on IE 6.0 a blank page appears, however, I can view it just fine on Mozilla?!? This has to be one of the oddest things I have ever encountered as I am fairly competent in using the template feature.

Can anyone offer me some advice and help!?! Thanks in advance!

I also should note that when I 'detach' the page from the template it works fine in the preview mode in IE, the only problem is when I attach it to the template I am having viewing issues. Thanks again!

Alright. I'm setting up a page using a template. I have pop-up menus in the left bar that is part of the template. The problem I'm having is when I add information to the "Content" (editable area) to the right side of that bar the content in the left bar of the template shift and white spaces are left in between each pop up menu. What's the deal? Some pages are just fine, but others have huge gaps only when viewed in a browser, they look fine on the page. If you have suggestions I'm open!
