Drawing to Scale in AI 10

I do a lot of floor layouts and drawings where it's necessary to draw to scale, e.g., set one inch actual to four feet and set snap points at three or four per foot.

Doing this in Corel Draw 10 is a snap (no pun intended), but I would rather use AI because of its greater functionality and larger user base. However, drawing rapidly to scale is a key driver. How can I do the? Do I have to buy add-ins?

In your preferences you can change all the grid and snap to distances. Once these are set you choose view grid from the view, (as well as some snaping toggles) menu for some added convenience. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
