Drawing this antenna 1

Hi,

I made a picture of this antenna

in photoshop. It's all fine except that if I make it smaller (150 x 150) you can't see what it is, it looks like a black stick. I really need to be able to show the twist on it. I was thinking if this is made in Illustrator I should be able to have it show the same detail at small size.
Problem is I am not too familiar with Illustrator. Can you guys give me some pointers? I am not even sure where to start.
