Drawbacks of using semantic to detect change?

I saw that someone used the semantic to detect the change in XML document. Could you tell me the advantages and limitations of using semantic, please?

What is "the semantic"? Semantics literally means "the meaning or interpretation of a word, sentence, or other language form".

Sorry if my English is so bad. Sematics here is the labels in the XML document.

In that research, the author computes the identifiers for the elements. And then he looks for the "matching"
identification.

I try to find the drawbacks of this research.
