Hey all,

Since a network upgrade all large downloads seem to nearly lock IE (very slow PC, the windows icon moves - top right).

The suddenly the file will download at a rate we cant support.

For instance XPSP1a took about 30mins to bring up the "where do you want to save too" then as soon as i said that it goes at 10mbps and saves it in about 30 seconds.

I think this is because the firewall/Cache server/virus scanning piece of kit (called a netpilot plus) is caching locally. This is fine apart from the view of the end user.

Any ideas how to remedy?

Hi Dan,

There's a very simple reason for what you're seeing here and it is normal.

Basically you have a Netpilot plus which is serving proxy to your clients, on your Netpilot no doubt you have Sophos Anti-Virus installed. By default your Netpilot will scan any downloaded file before the user gains access to it.

Obviously the Netpilot can't AV scan the download as it happens as the file is incomplete, so as a result it downloads the file, virus scans it, and then if it's clear it passes it to the user, which is why you see the delay.

You can get around this problem by changing your proxy server from port 8000 to 8001. This port bypasses the virus scanning and caching and hence your download will act normally, with a progess bar etc etc. However, remember that files are not being scanned as a result!

This solution can be particularly beneficial if you are running SUS or other apps which otherwise time-out waiting for the Netpilot to scan the file, but isn't a great idea for end users, unless they have AV installed on their desktop.

I hope this helps, anything else Netpilot related please feel free to ask!!

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Thanks for your help - i have tried this on the SUS to see wether it does help with our downloading issue. Thanks.

Do you use netpilots oftern? what do you think of them?
Do you ever deal with there helpdesk?

We are still new at using ours. We had it installed by an external. Quite annoyed that it cant interface with Active directory. Heard that an update soon will do this - cant wait for that one!

Thanks mike STAR
