Since being infected with Downloader.WinTrim and then cleaning that up and also all of the associated spyware... I am unable to run Windows Media Player 9. I double click the icon and it simply makes an error chime sound however nothing comes on the screen. I am running Windows XP Home.

Also I was having problem installing this game. I was told to copy my shell.dll file from my C:\WINDOWS folder to my C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder and this allowed me to install the game. I am guessing it may be related to the Window Media Player 9 issue I am having.

So basically it will not open up... I'm guessing that I might be missing a file...

Any ideas?

Open a command prompt and type: sfc /scannow
Be sure to have your XP cd in the drive.

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't help... I keep getting the error beep when I start up Windows Media Player 9... nothing comes up on the screen... not even an error message to tell me what the problem is.

like he said, run system file checker, also removing then reinstalling windows media player from the xp cd may help if system file checker fails. i have, at times, gotten away with just copying the executable from one machine to another (not the best solution mind you, i do reccoment uninstall and reinstall of the media player)
