I do not have a recovery disk for this 5630 compaq. tried to remove the mouse driver w/ alt keys. took 3 hrs to get to the system in control then when executed remove device the harddrive freeses .getting no where can i go through dos? if so can i remove windows and reinstall it. HELLLLLPPPPP>>>>>>>>>>

Get to safe mode , dos mode, or config mode. Probably config mode would be best (shift-[F8]) which will allow you to control drivers loaded. Or [F8] depending on what you have.
If you go into safe mode you can navigate with [tab} and arrow keys. Delete the mouse.
You can reinstall windows. But reinstallation path is dependent on version you have. I normally boot from floppy, choose the cd-rom driver, deltree the windows and progra~1 directories, switch to the cd-rom and run setup. But that wipes the os away along with everything you've installed. You can also overlay install it. But I will defer to someone else to list the files that must be removed/renamed to allow it. This will not remove your programs, but you might have other problems show up.
Ed Fair

If your are using win98, it sounds like the hardrive is using the real mode drivers, not the protected mode. To see if this is the case got start/settings/control panel/ system and go to the performance tab. This will tell you if the drives are using real mode. if they are you will need to delete them from the device manager and let windows redetect them. As for the mouse, Ed's suggestion is what I would do. Also delete the directory that the win3.1 mouse driver installed to (if any) and check out your autoexec.bat and your config.sys for references to any mice.

regards,
fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am interested in Mining Software, as well as Genetic Algorithms.
