I always download the latest defintion files for SpyBot, Ad-Aware, NAV, etc, and burn them to a CD so I can perform scans onsite even if I can'd connect to the 'net to download the updates. Is there any way to d/l just the updated definition files for MS Antispyware? The only way I can find to update is to run the update function from within the program, which of course is of no use if you can't connect, of if you have a slow dialup connection.

I d/l'd the files, put them in the folder, opened the program and selected "check for updates". The dialog box says "Warning, could not connect to the Internet" and "Updates have failed. Autoupdater could not detect an internet connection". And the Spyware Definitions date is not updated.

Am I missing something?

The gcd files are the latest defs to the best of my knowledge.

d/l'd? Do you mean deleted? If so, why?

Copy the three files into to Program files/Microsoft Antispyware and that should at least update for definitions for Antispyware. Have you tried to restart the program and see if the definitions file is updated?

Erik

d/l'd = downloaded.

Yes, I restarted the program and the def file date on the main screen is unchanged - it still shows the old date.

OK,

I uninstalled my current version of Antispyware and reinstalled it without an Internet connection.

Then, I copied the following to Program Files/Microsoft Antispyware and overwrote all three older files:

I then started Antispyware and it shows the defs as August 16th, 2005 (current). I was mistaken; when you "check for updates" it will still fail to connect to the Internet of course if you don't have a connection, but you should have the current defs. Make sense? In any event, that is the location on the web to get Antispyware updates manually and it worked for me. Sorry about the confusion about the Internet failed error, though. That will still error out.

Hope that helps,

Erik

Oh and when I do actually get back on the LAN and get reconnected to the Internet, it does verify that I do have the latest defs installed.

Erik

OK, I tried it with an existing install. I'll uninstall/reinstall when I have a chance and let you know. Thanks.

Just tried it on another machine. After the initial install and before installing any updates, the def file date was the current date. I then copied the updated files and could not get the application to run. Had to uninstall it, delete the folder, uninstall it and d/l the updates thru tha app.

You need to go to the Help About Screen and see what the definitions say there. I have noticed that the def file date is always the current date when you first install it.

So, when you copied the files and the application wouldn't run, exactly what did the program do, not even load?

Strange...when I installed Antispyware and copied the defs, it worked fine, even without an Internet connection.

Erik

App would freeze but I don't remember at what point. this is really not a good test case as it turns out it is heavily infected with viruses also.
